Although Joseph was Jacob's favorite son, the rest of Jacob’s sons felt very differently about Joseph - they hated him.
Their hatred for Joseph and his dreams motivates them to sell their own brother into Egyptian slavery. This chapter reminded future generations of Israelites that ultimately they had no one to blame but themselves for their slavery in Egypt.
But it’s also a reminder of how God’s providential care for His people is active even during some of the most difficult times of our lives.
