Hello Jameson, do you believe maybe both brothers were believing a different gospel? Maybe they were both believing they were entitled? Both sinners, both needing to take their selfish entitlement to the cross and put it to death?

What if the younger's selfish entitlement was put to death because he ran out of money? Thank God he didn't allow bitterness and jealousy toward his brother fill his heart and remainin that city. Yea he would of eventually got a better job, and maybe a wife and children, but the sin, the bitterness would have stayed in his heart and made a mess of his life.

Thank God the younger brother humbled himself and did repent and returned home to face the shame of his actions. It's petty obvious the older brother never repented of his sin of selfish entitlement.

Yes - both brothers were self-centered (at least at some point in the parable). But they both went about fulfilling their desires in different ways. The younger brother represented the tax collectors and sinners who were coming to Jesus to hear him, while the Pharisees and scribes were represented by the older brother. Both needed Jesus and what He was offering - but only one "brother" understood his need and returned to God.

The parable also emphasizes the love, grace, and forgiveness of the Father to those who come to Him. But first - one must recognize their sin and need to return to God.
