The problem is that to the scrupulous, their scruple is a matter of sound doctrine.

The problem is that those who wish to depart from sound doctrine almost always present their apostasy as nothing more than a scruple which therefore should not be judged per Romans 14.

Correct on both fronts - which is why I worded the end of the article the way I did.

Which is also one of the reasons why it's so important that those who shepherd, as well as those who preach, must know the Scriptures (Titus 1:9-11; 2 Timothy 2:15). False doctrine must be handled one way while matters of opinion and scruple must be handled a different way.

I hope you delve into the biblical evidence and correct hermeneutics that show which is which, either in this series or in another post.

It may take more than one post ha. But that might be something I discuss at some point - usually, once a year, I re-read Kevin Rhodes book, "How to Study the Bible: A Practical Guide to Biblical Hermeneutics." Perhaps after Romans I might start working on some material about how to study the Bible and include that in it.

Amen. When the things we contend for are not issues of salvation we should leave room for disagreement without holding resentment. This takes wisdom, maturity and experience in our walk with Christ Jesus. I believe the Lord allows these things to teach us to love even when disagreement happens. And how to go to our cross. We all know in part. Not many are able to control their ego and pride and it is sad to see when they go to their own rioting behavior to try to prove themselves right. When we stand before Him, our Lord of Lords & King of Kings Jesus, we will not be busy with who was right and who was wrong in matters of merely personal opinions, or having seen in part. What will matter is what Jesus will think of us on that day, even today and how we handle and respond to those who are weaker in their faith or babes in their understanding, for it is God who is able to make them stand! We honestly want to be counted faithful worthy & true even though we never can be on our own merits. So what we are to care about & take on board is standing and being teachable and humble before our Lord Jesus having done all to have been a peacemaker, and responding to our brothers & sisters with the fruits of God's spirit and in love with gentleness in meekness and deep respect, not with a spirit of self righteousness or pride.
