This article will conclude our three-part series on “what to say to a non-believer.”
We have examined both external and internal evidence as well as five specific arguments for the existence of God (Moral, Cosmological, Teleological, Ontological, and Aesthetic).
As we close, we want to go to the Word of God and reiterate the rock-solid proof that can lead to a rock-solid faith in the God of the Word!
Written So You May Believe and Know God.
When the apostle John closed his account of the life of Jesus, he penned these words by inspiration:
“And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:30-31).
The miracles, teachings, and life events of Jesus that are recorded for us in the New Testament provide more than enough evidence to prove that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that obedient faith in Him gives one the hope of eternal life (Heb. 5:8-9).
The purpose of the Bible is this: The salvation of man through Jesus Christ to the glory of God the Father as revealed by God the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, "And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3).
How do you know God? John says:
"Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him” (1 John 2:3-5).
When People Fail to Believe.
If one refuses to believe in God’s existence, in the deity of Christ, and/or in the power of the revealed Word, he or she will be lost eternally.
The Hebrews writer states that it is impossible to please God without faith (Heb. 11:6). Paul notes that “faith comes by hearing the Word of God” (Rom. 10:17).
If I keep my Bible closed, how can I possibly have faith? If I don’t have faith, how will I be saved eternally?
Jesus had some very strong words for those who choose to deny His deity:
“Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins” (John 8:24).
Furthermore, He said, “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven” (Matt. 10:32-33).
The Consequences of Rejecting the Gospel.
Non-believers need to have the evidence presented to them in a loving, kind, but direct way.
It will then be up to them what they decide to do with the information. They can deny it, laugh at it, ignore it, or respond by faith and obey what God says to do.
One thing is for sure, those who do not know God and do not obey the Gospel will be condemned to an eternal hell:
“and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power” (2 Thess. 1:7-9).
Souls Hang in the Balance.
Dear friends, this series of articles is eternally important, not because I have written them, but because souls are hanging in the balance! So many refuse to recognize the Lord for Who He is and deny His very existence.
On the Day of Judgment, when Jesus comes back to judge the world (Acts 17:30-31) and retrieve His bride (1 Thess. 4:13-18; Eph. 5:22-32), those who spent their life denying Him will use their final breaths acknowledging Him:
“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil. 2:9-11).
Don’t let that be the first time you confess Jesus as Lord!
Hear the Gospel (Rom. 10:17), believe that Jesus is the Son of God (John 3:16; 8:24), repent of your sins (Acts 2:38; 17:30), confess with the mouth that Jesus is Lord (Rom. 10:9-10; Acts 8:37), be immersed into Christ for the remission of your sins (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 22:16; Gal. 3:27; 1 Pet. 3:21), and be faithful unto death to receive the crown of life (Rev. 2:10).
