In this article, we continue our series of “what to say to a non-believer.” We have discussed external and internal evidence which proves the existence of God.
Our focus now shifts to five specific arguments you can use in a discussion with a non-believer.
The following arguments are not listed in any specific order but remember to build off of each argument as you supply ample evidence and strong proof.
#1. The Moral Argument for God’s Existence.
First, there is the Moral Argument.
There is a standard by which we know whether or not something is right or wrong. Moral Law exists, so a moral Lawgiver exists, which, of course, is the God of Heaven.
Morality is not based upon man’s subjective conscience, his ability, what he thinks/feels is right, or whether the majority of society is engaged in doing certain things. It is based upon God’s inspired revelation (Matthew 5:6; 7:12; I Timothy 1:5; Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)!
As human beings, we have the ability to reason and know whether or not something is right or wrong. Animals, of course, do not have that “moral” awareness that makes us different.
#2. The Cosmological Argument for God’s Existence.
Second, there is the Cosmological Argument.
If the universe can be neither eternal nor self-creating, then there must have been an “uncaused first cause,” a “prime mover.” The “uncaused first cause” is the eternal God. Something cannot come from nothing!
God is the self-existing, self-sustaining One, i.e., the “I Am” (Exo. 3:14).
If you are holding a smart device in your hand (iPhone, laptop, etc.) ask yourself this question: “How did this device come to be?” Did it just appear out of nowhere? Did it accidentally come to be? We understand that there had to be a designer and a creator to put the phone together.
On a grander scale, consider the complexity and beauty of the world!
#3. The Teleological Argument for God’s Existence.
Third, there is the Teleological Argument.
The universe shows order and design; therefore it must have had a designer. As I have presented in previous articles, we can see intelligent design which proves an intelligent Designer. Consider the “water cycle” that the Holy Spirit through Solomon revealed:
“All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full; To the place from which the rivers come, there they return again” (Eccl. 1:7).
Stop and consider the intelligence behind this!
#4. The Ontological Argument for God’s Existence.
Fourth, there is the Ontological Argument.
God must exist for He is the greatest being of which man can conceive; if man could conceive of something greater, that would be God. The Bible says this about the greatness of God:
“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (Eph. 3:20).
Notice that God is able. That word means, “sufficient to meet a need.” Whatever need you have, God can meet it!
What makes this passage so unique is what God can provide even above our basic needs. He is able to “exceedingly, abundantly, above all that we ask or think.” The word “think” literally means “to imagine.”
God is so powerful and so great that He knows our thoughts and can supply exactly what we need or even above and beyond what we can imagine (Psalm 139)!
#5. The Aesthetic Argument for God’s Existence.
Fifth and finally, there is the Aesthetic Argument.
Beauty exists in the universe, and its existence cannot be explained without the existence of an omnibenevolent God.
The fact that we can appreciate the beauty of a sunrise, a sunset, a starry night, and the colors changing around us is proof that a loving, powerful, and supernatural being created it all and allows us to use the senses given to us that we may enjoy these things.
There are more arguments to consider but these are just a few that can help us be prepared when speaking with a non-believer.
The arguments provided are logical and reasonable. God is reasonable and the Bible is reasonable (Isa. 1:18; Eph. 5:17).
May we encourage non-believers in a loving way to use common sense and allow the evidence to speak for itself!
