Jesus is not somewhere far away, unconcerned about you or what you are facing in life.
The Bible teaches that Jesus helps you every single day of your walk with God. He is always concerned about you.
Jesus Is Always with You
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20)
My middle child has many fears - especially spiders. One of his greatest fears is shown in something he says to me almost daily - “Daddy, don’t leave me.” He usually says it while we are walking out the door together. He’s afraid the door will close, and he will be outside while I’m inside. It terrifies him to feel separated from my wife or me.
As a disciple of Jesus Christ, you have the Lord’s promise that He will never leave you. While you can choose to leave Him (Galatians 5:4), He “will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).
In this life, you and I will experience moments where we feel very alone. Jesus even felt alone on the cross (Psalm 22:1-2). However, he continued to cry out because He knew He was heard (Psalm 22:22-24; Hebrews 5:7-8).
When we feel alone and abandoned by God, we should remind ourselves of His promise to never leave us. He always keeps His promises and never lies (Titus 1:2).
Jesus Sympathizes with You
Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:14-16)
How does it make you feel to know that when you are beaten down by sin or this life, Jesus feels compassion for you? While Jesus never sinned, He lived this life and faced temptation too (Matthew 4:1-11). He understands by experience what you are feeling.
Isaiah prophesied of Jesus that He would be “A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3). Jesus is our High Priest at the throne of God, and He is moved with compassion for us when He observes our weaknesses.
Knowing that God continually cares for you (1 Peter 5:7) and sympathizes with your situation should give you the confidence to bring your troubles and weaknesses to Him.
Jesus Intercedes for You
Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing. But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:23-25)
Because Jesus lives, He is able to save completely all those who come to God through Him (John 14:6). Jesus was alive one hundred years ago, and He will still be alive a hundred years from now.
Since He is always alive, He is able to make intercession for you continually. You will always have Jesus pleading your case before the throne of God.
Do you realize that you are the Lord’s focus? You are the one He is concerned about - He is always “working your case” as a lawyer. Jesus died for you in your place (2 Corinthians 5:21). Now that He has been raised from the dead, His life is also lived for you and is constantly concerned about you.
Jesus Advocates for You
My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. (1 John 2:1-2)
As Christians, I hope our goal is to never sin. However, if we do sin, God doesn’t cast us out of His presence. Jesus is our Advocate - or Helper - with the Father. He is the propitiation, or atoning sacrifice, for our sins.
By walking in the light, we remain where we have fellowship with God and where the blood of Jesus continues to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:7).
If we sin, we can confess that to God, be forgiven, and continue walking in the light with Him (1 John 1:8-9). This wonderful blessing is all thanks to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for our sins.
Jesus is the reason you and I can continue to walk with God, even though we may sin. Because of Jesus, God does not require sinlessly perfect conduct on our part - He requires faithfulness (Revelation 2:10).
Thank you
Good lesson, Jameson. I love the scripture in Hebrews 4 that tells us to come boldly to the throne even though our sin might cause us to be ashamed to the point of bowing our head, God is on His throne and ready to forgive.
