You are correct, they were short letters to existing churches, but with a prophetic overtone. Rev 1:3 says that the whole book is a prophecy, including the seven letters. The events of Ch6 on are for non-conquerors and the left behind. By grace we have been foretold everything. Seven is God’s divine number of completion. Why seven letters? Because the fullness of the Gentiles is complete in Laodicea.

Blind spots? The seven letters were prophesies on the state of evil during the age of the Gentiles. For those that conquer evil during these times, glory awaits. Far more serious than blind spots methinks.

Well I think Revelation 2-3 were "short letters" written to actual churches in Asia Minor. For the churches to be victorious in Christ - especially considering the trials they would soon face - some of them had things they needed to change and repent of. There is certainly an application to today though.
