I'm reminded of Peter's reply to Jesus in Matthew 16:16 - "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Also his reply to the Lord in John 6:68-69 - "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Now did they understand this in the same way they did after the resurrection of Jesus? Probably not. But they had some level of understanding of Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God, during His earthly ministry.
When do you think the 12 apostles actually believed Jesus was not only the Messiah but the Son of God?
