The God of the Bible is the One, True God.
The Bible reveals the mind of God and teaches us His attributes, i.e His omniscience (all-knowing), omnipotence (all-powerful), omnipresence (everywhere), and His omnibenevolence (all-loving). The Psalmist asked the rhetorical question,
“Also Your righteousness, O God, is very high, You who have done great things; O God, who is like You?” (Psa. 71:19).
Again, by inspiration, he asks,
“O Lord God of hosts, Who is mighty like You, O Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You” (Psa. 89:8).
When we consider the Bible’s descriptions of God, we ought to stand in awe of Him. In this article, we want to ask and answer the question, “Who is like God?”
The Text.
Our study comes from Isaiah 44:6-8 (NKJV):
“Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: ‘I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God. And who can proclaim as I do? Then let him declare it and set it in order for Me, Since I appointed the ancient people. And the things that are coming and shall come, Let them show these to them. Do not fear, nor be afraid; Have I not told you from that time, and declared it? You are My witnesses. Is there a God besides Me? Indeed there is no other Rock; I know not one.”
What God Reveals About Himself.
As we breakdown and discuss this text, first notice what God reveals about Himself. He is, “the Lord,” “the King of Israel," “Redeemer,” “Lord of hosts,” “the First and the Last.”
Consider what John writes in the Revelation that harmonizes with the description we find here in Isaiah:
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Rev. 1:8); “And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last” (Rev. 1:17); “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last” (Rev. 22:13).
Only Deity can make and validate these claims!
A Statement and Three Questions.
Second, consider the statements and questions asked.
Besides Me There is No God.
First, consider the statement, “Besides Me there is no God.” This truth radiates throughout Scripture. Moses penned,
“Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the Lord Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other” (Deut. 4:39).
Furthermore, Moses recorded,
“Now see that I, even I, am He, And there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; Nor is there any who can deliver from My hand” (Deut. 32:39).
When Solomon offered up a prayer at the dedication of the temple, he said,
“Lord God of Israel, there is no God in heaven above or on earth below like You, who keep Your covenant and mercy with Your servants who walk before You with all their hearts…that all the peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God; there is no other” (1 Kin. 8:23, 60).
When Elijah experienced the great victory on Mt. Carmel as God’s power was on display, the people confessed, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God” (1 Kin. 18:39).
In the New Testament, we consider what the apostle Paul preached on Mars Hill:
“God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things” (Acts 17:24-25).
He also wrote the fact that there is but One, True God:
“Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one” (1 Cor. 8:4).
Those in Thessalonica turned from the lifeless idols they served to “serve the living and true God” (1 Thess. 1:9).
Three Questions.
We also consider the three questions asked in this section:
Who can proclaim as I do?
Have I not told you from that time, and declared it?
Is there a God besides Me?
Of course, the answer to all of these questions is a resounding NO! Truly, there is no one or no thing like God!
He has declared Himself to the world by general revelation, i.e creation (Psa. 19:1-6; Rom. 1:20), by special revelation, i.e His Word (Psa. 19:7-11; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:3), and by the manifestation of His Son, Jesus: The Word Who was with God, was God, is God, and took on flesh” (John 1:1-3, 14; 14:9).
The all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-loving God knows you, loves you, and wants you to be saved (John 3:16-17; 1 Tim. 2:4; 2 Pet. 3:9). Why not submit to Him by faithful obedience!
I close with the words of Jude who glorified the God of Heaven with these words:
“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen” (Jude 24-25).
