When Life Seems Out of Control, Focus on What You Can Control
Peter reminded Christians of this very thing.
The war in Ukraine continues with Russia slowly gaining ground.
Gas prices at the pump are sky-high.
And to top it all off - summer decided to show up this week, and it’s five million degrees outside.
While we can certainly pray about these things (and plenty else), there is nothing we can personally do to change these situations.
So when we are confronted with many things we can’t control or change - what should Christians do? We should focus on what we can control - ourselves.
Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:13-16)
You Can Control Your Mind
Peter reminded Christians (he also calls them “pilgrims” in 1 Peter 1:1) to prepare their minds for action and think clearly.
They were to rest their hope entirely upon God’s favor that would be brought to them when Jesus was revealed.
Peter reminds Christians - “Get your mind right! Start thinking about what a blessing it will be when you see Jesus face to face.”
When we feel overwhelmed by all the things of this life - remember the hope you have in Christ Jesus (1 Peter 1:3) and the incredible blessing it will be to see His face and live forever with Him one day.
You Can Control Your Actions
Not only should Christians control their thoughts, but they should also control their actions. Peter likens Christians to “obedient children,” - meaning it is important to obey God.
We must be holy - not living like the rest of the world lives, but living a holy, set apart life for the glory of God.
Just as our mind should be focused on God, our actions should also be focused on God.
While sometimes we feel like we have life under control, sometimes we feel totally out of control.
In these moments, it’s important to remind ourselves that we can still control our thoughts and actions - and that both should focus on God and glorify Him (Matthew 5:16).
