The nations and rulers of this world like to think they are in control and have the power.
They like to pretend that they answer to no one.
When the nations oppose God
Why do the nations rage, and the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, “Let us break Their bonds in pieces and cast away Their cords from us.” (Psalm 2:1-3)
When nations oppose God, they “plot a vain thing." Their plans to overthrow the Almighty God will be brought to nothing.
God laughs
God laughs at their foolishness - because their power is as nothing compared to His. Their efforts to rebel against Him do not remove His King from the throne.
He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, and distress them in His deep displeasure: “Yet I have set My King on My holy hill of Zion.” “I will declare the decree: the LORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ” (Psalm 2:4-9)
The only begotten Son of God is the King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:11-16). Even if all the nations and people rebelled against Him, He would still be King over all. Everyone will stand before the judgment seat of Christ, and every knee will bow to Him (Romans 14:10-11).
Submit to God
So, instead of rebelling against Him, we ought to submit ourselves to His rule.
Now therefore, be wise, O kings; be instructed, you judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him. (Psalm 2:10-12)
People don’t like the idea of a God of justice and wrath - but that is the picture given for those who rebel against Him.
Knowing the terror of standing before Christ, having lived a life of rebellion against Him, we urge everyone to prepare.
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men. (2 Corinthians 5:10-11)
Submit to your Lord and Savior today. Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins (Acts 2:38).
His resurrection and His blood will save you from the wrath to come.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. (Romans 5:8-10)
