Merriam-Webster defines the word “unique” as “being without a like or equal.” Christianity is the religion based on the Person and teaching of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
Those of us who have weighed the evidence found in the Word of God know and believe that Jesus is the Son of God (John 20:30-31). He was born of a virgin (Isa. 7:14) and lived a perfect life (Heb. 7:26) before dying on the cross for the sin of the world (John 1:29; 3:16-17). Jesus, Who was put to death, rose from the dead three days later (Rom. 1:4).
In this article, we want to discuss and examine what makes Christianity so unique.
Because of Where it’s From.
First, Christianity is unique because it is from Heaven.
There are many man-made religions in this world, in fact, there are thousands (over 45,000 globally)! All claim to be right, but dear friends, all could be wrong, but certainly all cannot be right.
Jesus established one church (Matt. 16:18; Eph. 1:22-23; 4:4; 5:22-32; Col. 1:18). Those who obey the Gospel of Christ are added to the body (church) of Christ (Acts 2:47). Those who reposed by faith in obedience to the Gospel are Christians only and the only Christians (Rom. 1:16; 1 Pet. 2:9-10).
Consider the first time the word “Christian” appears in the New Testament:
“And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch” (Acts 11:26).
The disciples, members of the church, were called Christians. A Christian is a baptized believer who has been called out of the world and into Christ by the Gospel (Mark 16:16; John 3:5; 1 Cor. 12:13; Col. 2:12-14).
On one occasion, when the religious leaders tried to trap Jesus, He asked them a question regarding “John’s baptism” in which they had no answer: “The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me” (Mark 11:30).
This is the question we need to ask when analyzing religious groups in our society today. Christianity is from Heaven, not from men!
Because of How it’s Spread.
Second, Christianity is unique because it is a taught religion.
Jesus said,
“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen” (Matt. 28:18-20).
Notice the formula: Make disciples by baptizing them into the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then, continue to teach them so they can go out and teach others (2 Tim. 2:2).
You see, Christianity is not forced as some religions are. God made us all as free-moral agents meaning we get to choose whether or not we will obey Him.
Jesus also said,
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me” (John 6:44-45; cf. Rom. 10:17; cf. Acts 22:16).
Because of Who its Founder is.
Third and finally, Christianity is unique because the Founder is living!
Mohammad, the founder of Isalm, died on June 8, 632 AD. Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, died in 483 BC. Kong Qi, the founder of Confucianism, died at the age of 73 in 479 BC. Martin Luther, the founder of the Lutheran Church, died on February 18th, 1546.
What do all of these individuals have in common?
They died and were buried.
These were mortal men who started religions, but the One Who gave His life for the world rose from the dead three days later! Jesus is alive and well today at the right hand of God (Heb. 1:1-3; Acts 2:22-36; Rom. 1:4; 1 Cor. 15:1-8)!
One day, He is coming back for His bride, the church (1 Thess. 4:13-18). Those that are found faithful will hear the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Those who do not obey God will hear, “Depart from me, I never knew you” (Matt. 7:21-24; 10:32-33; 2 Thess. 1:7-9).
If you are not a Christian, prayerfully and carefully consider these passages; then, obey from the heart to become a child of God:
Hear the Gospel (Rom. 10:17).
Believe that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God (John 3:16; 8:24).
Repent of your sins (Acts 2:38; 3:19; 17:30).
Confess with the mouth that Jesus is Deity (Acts 8:37; Rom. 10:9-10).
Be baptized into Christ for the remission of your sins (Acts 2:38, 41; 22:16; Rom. 6:3-6; 1 Pet. 3:21).
Live faithfully unto death (1 John 1:7-9; Rev. 2:10).
Drew Suttles is a minister for the Quitman church of Christ in Quitman, Georgia, and one of my best friends in this world. They live-stream all their Bible classes and sermons on their YouTube channel.
Drew also hosts the “Weathering the Storm” podcast on the Scattered Abroad Network. Drew talks about facing life’s challenges as a child of God. His podcast will be a blessing to your life.
This was an excellent explanation of Christianity. I am greatful for the faith of my parents who were followers of Jesus Christ and led by example by walking the narrow path.
