"To Whom Shall We Go?" (John 6:67-71)
Spiritual Questions with Scriptural Answers.
We live in a day and age where information is literally at our fingertips.
In fact, we can even use our voices to “Ask Siri,” and get a wealth of information in a matter of seconds.
While it is very efficient, convenient, and mostly helpful, trusting any and every source can be very dangerous.
Listen to the Right Source.
When it comes to spiritual matters, we must go to the right Source: The Word of God.
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16-17).
Since the Word of God is all-sufficient, why would I seek any other source? (2 Pet. 1:3). Unfortunately, throughout the religious world, people look to and listen to what man says instead of trusting in what God says.
In this study, we want to consider an important day and moment in Jesus’ ministry in which several disciples were forced to make a decision: Listen to man and what sounds good in our minds or listen to the Master Teacher, Jesus Christ and the truth?
Are You Listening to Jesus?
Jesus performed many powerful miracles including an occasion when He fed 5,000 plus with a young boy’s lunch (John 6:1-14).
The next day, Jesus gave the crowd “spiritual food” as He preached about His deity and what He came to earth to provide: “Jesus answered them and said,
“Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him” (John 6:26-27).
Jesus made the great statement, “I AM the Bread of Life” (John 6:35), but the Jews rejected His teaching (John 6:41-58).
Sadly, even some of His own disciples turned back and followed Him no more (John 6:60-66). This led to an important moment and powerful confession made by Peter:
“Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (John 6:67-69).
Peter’s question was followed by a powerful statement about the Lord’s words: “You have the words of eternal life.” This statement of faith was connected to the truth that Jesus is the “Christ, the Son of the living God.”
The words that Jesus spoke were divine words. What Peter recognized is essential for us to grasp today. Jesus is the Source and we must look to Him (Heb. 12:1-2).
The words of Jesus will be the standard by which we all be judged:
“He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day” (John 12:48).
He is the Author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him (Heb. 5:8-9). He is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man comes unto the Father expect through Him” (John 14:6).
Peter’s statement was based upon evidence. He and the others who were determined to follow Jesus knew Who Jesus was, what He offered, and that no one else could provide what He could.
I encourage you before you tell someone when asked a Bible question, “Let me ask my preacher,” to study the Word of God for yourself and see what the Lord has to say!
We each have a responsibility to “study to show ourselves approved unto God” (2 Tim. 2:15) and we have been given an example to “search the Scriptures daily to find out whether or not something is so” like the noble Bereans (Acts 17:11).
You have the ability to go to other sources, but only Jesus has the words of eternal life. Don’t settle for a man-made opinion; trust in the rock-solid truth of God!
