Those Who Spread Lies Never Get What They Want
And God hates lying.
While I believe some politicians are truthful - many have the reputation of being liars.
This is why the public’s trust in government is near a historic low. How can you trust people - or a group of people - that you aren’t sure if what you are told is the truth?
For people to trust you, you must tell the truth.
The Bible has a lot to say about lying and what God thinks of lying.
What God Thinks of Liars
Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who deal truthfully are His delight. (Proverbs 12:22)
These six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren. (Proverbs 6:16-19)
To speak a lie is to speak that which is an abomination to God. “Abomination” means “intensely disgusting.”
God Cannot Lie
God is wholly opposed to lying; He cannot lie.
…in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began, (Titus 1:2)
Jesus described Himself as “the truth” (John 14:6). John also said Jesus is “full of grace and truth” (John 1:14, 17).
God is disgusted by lying because it is the opposite of His nature.
God is often described in Scripture as being “faithful” or “trustworthy” because He never lies - He always speaks the truth.
Lying Will Not Give a Person What They Want
Sometimes people lie because they think it will get them what they want - and maybe it will for a brief time. But eventually, lies will destroy a person.
“He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers; but the face of the LORD is against those who do evil.” (1 Peter 3:10-12)
This passage is from Psalm 34:12-16 and speaks to the importance of Christians doing what is right and turning away from what is evil, including “speaking deceit” or “lies.”
Lying has done as much to destroy people’s lives and nations as anything else.
Christians should stand out as different in this world - one way we do that is by being people who do not speak or spread lies.
People may not always like the truth, and the truth may not always be as profitable in the short term - but that does not give us the right to speak or spread lies.
