There is shame in being lazy when a person should be working.
He who gathers in summer is a wise son; He who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame. (Proverbs 10:5)
For a farmer, there is work to be done when the crops are ready to be harvested. If the farmer leaves the crop in the field when it should be harvested, the crop will soon rot away.
Jesus told His disciples that it was already harvest time - speaking of people who were needing Him.
My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! (John 4:34-35)
Later, Jesus said He must do the will of the Father “while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work” (John 9:4).
While we are alive, that is our time to serve God. Once the night comes - once death arrives - there will be no time to do what we should have done.
The harvest is ready in the field - souls need to hear the saving message of Jesus Christ. Now is the time to reach the people of this world with the gospel (Romans 1:16-17).
Will we be wise and work for the Lord now while it is day and the harvest waits in the field?
Or will we shamefully avoid serving God while we have the opportunity?
