The Story Where Every Chapter is Better Than the One Before
Thinking about eternity with God.
C.S. Lewis’ final paragraph in the final book of The Chronicles of Narnia said this:
And for us this is the end of all the stories, and we can most truly say that they all lived happily ever after. But for them it was only the beginning of the real story. All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on for ever: in which every chapter is better than the one before. - C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle, 767
The picture C.S. Lewis paints of eternity with God is a story that goes on forever, where every chapter is better than the one before it.
The apostle Paul describes God’s grace and kindness to us in Christ Jesus in a similar way.
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:4-7)
Did you catch what he said?
“…that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”
God’s kindness that He has shown us in Christ Jesus is not limited to our short lives on this earth. He will continue to show us the “exceeding” overflowing riches of His grace “in the ages to come.”
Even if we spent our entire lives growing “in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18), it’s as if the Holy Spirit says through Paul, “You haven’t seen - you haven’t heard - anything yet.”
Eternity with God is truly the never-ending story that keeps getting better and better.
The bliss is ever new.
Amen
