Life has a way of overwhelming us sometimes.
Our loved ones get sick and sometimes die. Sometimes we endure struggles with our job. Maybe our family life has been challenging lately.
Sometimes it feels like everything is crashing down around us all at once.
When you feel overwhelmed, where do you turn? David turned to God.
Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. (Psalm 61:1-2)
The picture David paints is of God’s protection and care. David describes God leading him up a rocky summit to a place where he could be safe and comforted.
He turns to God for protection because God has always been his protection.
For You have been a shelter for me, A strong tower from the enemy. (Psalm 61:3)
Just as a strong tower would provide shelter and comfort in the face of an enemy, so God was David’s protection.
David found great comfort and peace in God’s protection.
I will abide in Your tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah (Psalm 61:4).
David drew close to God because He could be trusted.
When we feel overwhelmed, where do we turn?
David didn’t turn to his skills as a warrior; he didn’t turn to his financial resources - he turned to the Lord his God.
God cares so much for you and wants you to turn to Him (1 Peter 5:7). Jesus offers rest and comfort to those who turn to Him.
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)
As he considered the Lord’s protection and care for him, he said, “I will sing praise to Your name forever” (Psalm 61:8).
In an overwhelming world, will you turn to the One who can “lead you to the rock that is higher than I?”
