The first thing God identified as not good was man being alone (Genesis 2:18).
Many of us don’t like being alone. When I’ve gone a few days with Ashley and the kids out of town, I am ready for them to come home. I don’t like being alone.
God has addressed our fear of being alone.
Physical Family
God created Eve as a companion for Adam (Genesis 2:21-24). God created marriage between a man and a woman because He knew it wasn’t good for us to be alone. Our physical family protects us against our fear of being alone.
Sometimes people are rejected or left alone by their physical family. Eventually, our family members die. What then?
God didn’t stop with your physical family.
The Church
The church that belongs to Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:22-23) is a family. Christians are the children of God (Ephesians 1:5).
Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! (1 John 3:1)
Even if you lost every member of your physical family, you still have a family who loves you in Christ.
The church is a family that is united together as the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). The church exists to encourage and build each other up (Hebrews 10:24-25).
But what if you are separated from the church? What if your health fails, and you can’t be with the church in person? Are you all alone?
God planned for this event too.
Jesus Christ
When the apostle Paul stood alone - deserted by every Christian - he was not truly alone.
At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be charged against them. But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. (2 Timothy 4:16-17)
When everyone else left Paul, someone stood with him - the Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus promised His disciples that He would always be with them.
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20)
Even if you have no physical family left. Even if the church deserts you or your health prevents you from being with the church - Jesus, your Good Shepherd, will never leave you or forsake you.
Sometimes we may feel alone. But those who cling to Him in faith will never again truly be alone.
God doesn’t want you to be alone, and with Him, you are never alone.
