Let’s be honest - we enjoy being praised.
But sometimes we enjoy praise so much we praise ourselves!
What does God have to say about this?
Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips. (Proverbs 27:2)
In our world, we experience a constant stream of online updates. If you don’t continue to let people know what’s going on in your life, you get shuffled to the side and forgotten.
Many influential people maintain social media pages for the sole purpose of keeping themselves in front of their audience.
Some of the updates are harmless - I mean, I wasn’t curious to know what you are having for supper, but it looks good! Sometimes the updates indicate a problem with ego and pride. And yes, preachers can sometimes be the worst.
I came across a quote by Tony Dungy. His high school football coach told the team, “Talent is God-given - be thankful. Praise is man-given - be humble. Conceit is self-given - be careful.”
As people, we feel good when we are praised - but we need to be careful.
When we are praised, let it be from someone else's mouth.
When we receive praise, let’s be thankful to God for the opportunity He gave us.
When we are praised, may we always remain humble.
