Do You Think About Whether Something is Better Left Unsaid?
Not everything that comes to your mind should be said.
Silence has become even more valuable in a world where it is easier than ever to say something.
Cato said something along the lines of, “I begin to speak only when I'm certain what I'll say isn't better left unsaid.”
There is wisdom in carefully choosing our words - perhaps even remaining silent sometimes.
In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise. (Proverbs 10:19)
He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction. (Proverbs 13:3)
He who has knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit. Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive. (Proverbs 17:27-28)
Every time a political movement - from the Left or Right - seizes the country and stirs up emotions, everyone is called to “speak up!” If we remain silent, we are told that we are handing the victory to the other side.
While sometimes it is necessary to take action and speak up - sometimes the right and wise decision means being silent.
Don’t believe me?
He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. (Isaiah 53:7)
That passage is a prophecy about Jesus Christ (Acts 8:32-35).
Sometimes the right thing to do is to be silent.
In a world full of noise and shouting, the silent ones often demonstrate their wisdom. Christians must understand the importance of not always saying what comes to mind (James 1:19-20).
