Individuals search for happiness in numerous places.
Some look for happiness in their possessions, in their accomplishments, or in their positions. But true happiness does not spring from the above sources. Instead, true happiness comes from God.
Thus, the psalmist wrote:
“Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God” (Psalm 146:5).
But why is this the case? Notice the reasons stated in Psalm 146.
God is the source of happiness because He is the creator of all.
First, God is the source of happiness because He is the creator of all. The psalm says of God: “Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them” (Psalm 146:6).
As the creator of all things, including man, it follows that God would be aware of what man needs to be happy.
God is the source of happiness because He is the keeper of truth.
Second, God is the source of happiness because He is the keeper of truth.
Rather than making arbitrary decisions based upon His whims, God’s decisions and decrees are settled (Psalm 119:89). Hence, the psalmist described how God “keeps truth forever” (Psalm 146:6).
This, of course, is why Paul could write: “…I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that day” (2 Timothy 1:12).
God is the source of happiness because He is just.
Third, God is the source of happiness because He is just. The Psalmist described how God “executes justice for the oppressed” (Psalm 146:7).
It is such a blessing to know God will act justly in all He does (see Genesis 18:25; 2 Peter 2:9).
Happiness comes from God!
