Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the hearts. (Proverbs 21:2)
Social media constantly displays the truth of this proverb.
Whether in religion, politics, morality, or anything else, every person seems to believe their viewpoint is correct.
Now, I might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I know that not everyone who thinks they are right is. I’m also wrong sometimes.
The second half of this proverb reveals the standard for right and wrong and also how we can find the truth ourselves.
“The LORD weighs the hearts.”
God evaluates what is going on in our minds - He sees your thoughts.
Everyone thinks they are right - but not everyone is, and God understands who is right and wrong perfectly because He sees what is going on in their mind.
God’s Word shows us what is right and the path we should follow.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)
We need to be willing to admit that we might be wrong - and look to God’s Word to show us where we truly are and where we need to go.
If someone is too caught up in their own opinion - why look to God’s Word? They already believe they are right. Or maybe they will look to God’s Word only long enough to find something that they believe supports their viewpoint.
I’ve learned that it is best to make my mind up slowly about an issue or situation. This means I will also be slow to speak and share my thoughts. I didn’t come up with that myself - the Bible teaches that this is the wise path (James 1:19-20).
Have you become so caught up in your own way of thinking that you have dismissed any possibility that you might be wrong?
Have you ever considered it?
You may be fooling yourself and others- but you sure aren’t fooling God.
