God’s Commands for Masters and Servants.
“If your brother, a Hebrew man, or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you and serves you six years, then in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you. And when you send him away free from you, you shall not let him go away empty-handed; you shall supply him liberally from your flock, from your threshing floor, and from your winepress. From what the LORD has blessed you with, you shall give to him. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you; therefore I command you this thing today.
And if it happens that he says to you, “I will not go away from you,’ because he loves you and your house, since he prospers with you, then you shall take an awl and thrust it through his ear to the door, and he shall be your servant forever. Also to your female servant you shall do likewise.
It shall not seem hard to you when you send him away free from you; for he has been worth a double hired servant in serving you six years. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all that you do. (Deuteronomy 15:12-18)
God laid down laws regarding slavery for Israel.
If an Israelite was sold to another Israelite (done to pay off a debt), they would serve six years and be set free the seventh year.
The master was not to send them away with nothing in the seventh year but was supposed to generously give from their wealth to help set the former servant up in life. They were supposed to remember how God had brought them out of Egyptian slavery and had richly blessed them.
But the servant was given a choice – they could go free or decide to serve their Master for the rest of their life because of how the master had treated them and how they loved their master in return.
If the servant decided this, they would be taken to the door and have their ear “pierced,” which meant they would be the master’s servant forever. This is where the song “Pierce My Ear” comes from.
As a side note, God’s judgment came upon Israel later because they refused to obey Him regarding these commands (Jeremiah 34:8-22).
The servant who freely chose to stay with the master did so out of love for the master – because of what the master had done for him or her.
The way masters were supposed to treat their servants was based on what God had done for Israel in bringing Israel out of Egyptian slavery.
Christians are like servants who have decided to serve their master forever because of what the master has done. We love our Master because of what He has done for us.
#1 - I Love My Master Because He Heard Me.
In Exodus 6:5, the Lord told Moses, “And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel whom the Egyptians keep in bondage, and I have remembered My covenant.”
Jesus saw how the people were oppressed and scattered like sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:35-36). When blind, Bartimaeus cried out to Jesus, the Lord heard him and healed him (Mark 10:46-52).
Jesus invites all those who are weary, oppressed, and burdened down under sin to come to Him.
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
Our Master hears our cry and sees our affliction. We ought to love Him because of His great love and concern for us (Hebrews 4:14-16).
#2 - I Love My Master Because He Freed Me.
The Lord commanded Moses to tell the nation of Israel, “I am the LORD; I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, I will rescue you from their bondage” (Exodus 6:6a).
Leviticus 25:38-42 describes how the “year of Jubilee” was when slaves would be set free, and debts would be forgiven. This is how Jesus refers to His mission.
And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
“The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.” (Luke 4:17-19)
Not everyone thought they needed the freedom and forgiveness Jesus offered. But He made it clear that all needed what He was offering - because when we sin, we become enslaved by sin (John 8:31-36).
Our Master came to set us free from our sins. We ought to love Him because He has freed us from sin's cruel tyranny!
#3 - I Love My Master Because He Redeemed Me.
The final part of Exodus 6:6 reveals that the Lord would redeem the nation of Israel with “an outstretched arm and great judgments” (Exodus 6:6b)
As the Lord’s death on the cross quickly approached, He spoke of the “judgment” that would be brought through His death.
Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” This He said, signifying by what death He would die. (John 12:31-33)
God’s power and judgment would be demonstrated through what Jesus would do on the cross (1 Corinthians 1:18-25).
Jesus redeems us from the law's curse - becoming a curse for us.
(For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.” But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just shall live by faith.” Yet the law is not of faith, but “the man who does them shall live by them.”
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. (Galatians 3:10-14)
The price He paid to redeem us was His own precious blood (1 Peter 1:17-19).
Our Master has set us free from sin - and the price He paid to free and redeem us was His own blood! How we ought to love Him for redeeming us!
#4 - I Love My Master Because He Chose Me.
I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the LORD your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. (Exodus 6:7)
Peter wrote to Christians and reminded them that they are God’s chosen people.
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. (1 Peter 2:9-10)
Paul reminded Christians that they had been chosen in Christ Jesus. All spiritual blessings from God are found in Him (Ephesians 1:3-6).
How we ought to love our Master for choosing us as the people in Him to bless with His mercy and grace!
#5 - I Love My Master Because He Blessed Me.
The Lord promised to bless the children of Israel by giving them a new home and keeping His promises.
And I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the LORD. (Exodus 6:8)
Peter reminded Christians of the inheritance that awaited them - which was reserved in heaven for them.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (1 Peter 1:3-5)
Jesus told His apostles of the place He was going to prepare for them with the Father - and how He was the only way to the Father (John 14:1-6).
Our Master has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Him, and He even graciously gives us an eternal home with Him! We love our Master because of how He richly blesses us!
Our Master has done so much for us and offers so much to us.
So, will we willingly and lovingly choose to serve Him?
Amen!!!
