John makes it very clear that the Word - Jesus - was rejected by the people of this world.
He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. (John 1:10-11)
Why do people reject Jesus?
John gives some reasons why.
Some love darkness more than the Light.
Jesus pointed out that some people reject Him because they love darkness more than Him - the Light of the world (John 8:12).
And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. (John 3:19-20)
Some are afraid of what others think.
Some people were afraid to speak openly of Jesus or follow Him because they feared what others would think of them.
Then the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?” And there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. Some said, “He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.” However, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews. (John 7:11-13)
Some are misinformed about the facts.
Some reject Jesus because they misunderstand who He is and His mission.
Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.” Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?” So there was a division among the people because of Him. (John 7:40-43)
Some are hardened by their traditions.
Some people rejected Jesus because what He did and taught disagreed with their traditions. The same thing still happens today.
They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees. Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” Therefore some of the Pharisees said, “This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.” Others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. (John 9:13-16)
Some love the praise of men more than the praise of God.
Some people reject Jesus simply because they care more about praise from people than praise from God.
Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. (John 12:42-43)
Just as people rejected Jesus while He walked this earth, people still reject Him today.
But the choice is yours - you don’t have to reject Him.
Choose to obey Him and follow Him.
