If you were going to describe the Bible to someone, how would you do it?
While many words may come to your mind, what if the Bible had a verse that described itself?
The writer of Hebrews gave us a description of God’s Word. He wrote by inspiration, “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).
What does this verse tell us about God’s Word, the Bible?
The Word of God is Living.
While some think the Bible is a dead book, it is far from dead.
In the parable of the sower, Jesus said that “the seed is the Word of God” (Luke 8:11).
Anyone who has planted a garden knows that if you want to pick a big, juicy tomato, you first must plant a tomato seed.
Just as life is in the tomato seed, life is also in the Word of God.
The Word of God is Powerful.
God is all-powerful, so it is no surprise that He describes His Word as powerful. His Word is powerful with an amazing purpose.
Paul wrote, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.” (Romans 1:16).
The Gospel, or good news, is God’s power to save all humanity.
Not only is His Word alive, but it is His power to save us!
The Word of God is Sharp.
A book that is living and powerful ought to make a difference in the lives of those who read it and hear it.
Those who heard Peter preach on the day of Pentecost were “cut to the heart” by what they had heard and asked Peter what they should do (Acts 2:37).
The Word of God has the power to convict us of our sins, and it reveals what we must do to have our sins forgiven (Acts 2:38). However, not everyone will respond as the 3,000 souls on the day of Pentecost.
Some will respond like the Pharisees. They were cut to the heart by the preaching of God’s Word, and in a fury, dragged Stephen outside the city and stoned him to death.
They were convicted of their sin but were unwilling to submit themselves to God’s Word.
God’s Word is a book that is living, powerful, and able to convict us of our sin.
Because of these qualities, some are hesitant to spend time studying His Word for fear of seeing themselves as they truly are.
Never forget that God loves you, and He gave you His Word so that you can know what He did for you so that you can live for Him.
