What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. (Romans 8:31-34)
In light of God’s eternal plan, Paul further emphasizes how God loves and cares for His people - even during times when they suffer.
What God Has Done.
With God on the Christian’s side - what difference does opposition from this world make?
God delivered up His own Son.
God’s love is shown in the fact that He did not spare His own Son - but gave Him to die for all people. If anyone ever doubts that God loves them, they need to look no further than the Son of God dying on the cross in their place.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)
By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. (1 John 3:16)
If God was willing to deliver His own Son for us - how then will He not give us all things that we need for our salvation?
“All things” does not refer to material things, freedom from ill health, or freedom from difficulties encountered in the general course of life. Rather, “all things” refers to everything necessary for salvation. It signifies that all is needed to protect Christians from every type of spiritual danger, including any “third party or power or force or circumstance or lesser supernatural being.” - Pollard, Truth for Today Commentary, 303
It is God who justifies.
What charge can anyone bring against the one “in Christ Jesus?”
Remember that the idea of justification is when the charges are dropped against a guilty individual. So, who can overrule God if God “drops the charges” against us?
Well, no one! If God declares a person justified - then they are justified! It is by the blood of His Son that sinners are justified.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. (Romans 5:8-9)
Jesus is the Christian’s risen intercessor.
The Son of God who died for us has risen from the dead and is now at God’s right hand, interceding on the Christian’s behalf.
Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25)
Not only has God concerned Himself with your salvation in the past - through the death of His Son - but He also continues to concern Himself with your salvation - through the ongoing intercession of His Son on your behalf.
This section of Scripture doesn’t mean that a Christian can never fall from God’s grace or lose their salvation because we see Christians being warned about that by Paul elsewhere (Galatians 5:4).
This section emphasizes that the faithful child of God - especially those suffering - can take comfort in knowing that God cares deeply for them and continues to demonstrate His love for them.
It is a blessing and comfort to know how many wonderful things God has done - and continues to do for us!
